Chora, the vibrant capital of Naxos Island

Naxos town, or Chora, is the center of the island, and the main port for passenger ferries is also located there. This place offers a unique experience to its visitors as it blends classic Cycladic architecture with some Venetian influences. Moreover, Chora is the most historical and cultural spot-on Naxos Island.

Regarding where to eat in Naxos Chora, the old market area has many traditional tavernas and excellent restaurants. Another option is the waterfront road along the port, which is full of restaurants, cafés, and bars.

Attractions and historical sites

The Temple of Apollo or Portara is iconic and the most famous site on Naxos, located in Chora. It is at the entrance to Naxos’ capital. This historical site dates back to the 6th century BC, and the best time to visit is at sunset.

Apart from Portara, the Venetian castle is easily recognizable on a hill overlooking Naxos town. It is a remnant of the Venetians from the 13th century. It is very interesting to visit and walk through its cobblestone alleys, discover old mansions, and visit the Archeological Museum.

When visiting Naxos Chora, you can’t miss the splendid sunset view from Portara or a stroll through the narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses. Exploring the town of Naxos on foot is incredible, given the beauty of the island’s capital. What’s more, you’ll find many traditional tavernas serving local cuisine and delicious dishes. Don’t forget to try graviera cheese, Naxos potatoes and the local Kitron liqueur.
For history buffs, a visit to the Venetian castle and archaeological museum is a must.

Are there beaches in Naxos town?

Naxos town has no beaches for swimming and leisure, but if you wish, beaches can be reached very easily by using a local bus or booking a taxi online. Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Maragkas are some of the beaches on the island, and none are far from Naxos town.

How far is Naxos Chora from the airport?

Naxos airport is about 2.8 kilometers from Naxos Chora. To get there you, can use public transport, but the most suitable option is to take a taxi. To not waste your time, it is better to book your taxi online in advance and be sure that a car is waiting to pick you up on time.
